These are two options to makeover your smile and help boost your confidence. Bonding and veneers are both effective ways to repair and enhance the look of teeth. Each individual’s dental health will determine what option is best for you and your dentist will help guide you to your best option.

Porcelain Veneers

I am sure you have seen the amazing smile transformations that can happen with porcelain veneers on extreme makeover reality shows. We use them all the time at our office and we love them. Porcelain Veneers are thin sheets of porcelain designed to go over the fronts and edges of front teeth to change the color, shape, texture or length of the teeth. They help create a beautiful new smile for you, that could give you that extra confidence boost to land that new promotion or help your smile light up a room when you walk in.

When porcelain veneers are applied there are some cases where no tooth preparation is necessary but they normally require us to prepare the teeth by removing some enamel and some normal tooth structure. After removing a portion of a tooth we place a veneer of porcelain over the top and edge of the tooth.

Bonding is the process of applying tooth-colored life-life plastics to your teeth. It has been around since the 1970’s and has many advantages. It is mostly used to repair cavities and replace decayed tooth structure. When used specifically for changing the appearance of teeth, it can help close small spaces and gaps. It can be used to lengthen or widen teeth.

However, there are downsides to bonding. The material can break, crack, chip, stain and discolor. The long term success varies with the dentists ability and how well a patient takes care of them. There are many different ways to break the bonding, ones as simple as opening a package with your teeth which is why many dentists prefer stronger materials than plastic.
